Who is affected by colour combinations?
- Colour blind: Less than 1% of women, but 10% of men, are colour blind. Most cannot distinguish well between red and green.
- Visually impaired: need high contrast.
- Dyslexic users: need subtler contrast. Too high can be jarring.
How to make colour accessible
- Create strong contrast, but soften it a little.
- Supplement colour coding with text or icons.
- Use green and red together to convey information (for example in ‘Merry Christmas’ graphics).
